Go for the floor mat concept but use velcro to hold it in place. The stiff hook part of the velcro goes on the mat. The soft fuzzy part of the velcro goes onthe boat. Without the mat you still have a soft place for feet. You cna use carpet squares for your pad, or head to the garden department and get the tough foam kneeling pads. usually these are under $2. I use one in the canoe as a kneeling pad. They are very durable, water resistant, and cheap. An ideal combination in my book!
