Hey Scott!
Most of the racks for my 2 door hatch back are pretty flimsy looking, with the roof curving in two planes and no rain gutters there's nothing to attach a rear bar to. I had all but written off the idea of a commercial roof rack... until today.
Saw the same model of car with an roof rack I've not seen before, with a rear cross bar that 'clipped' to the roof at the hatch instead of the usual floating extension, with longitudinal bars running back up to the front cross bar. The car exited the interstate before I could get close enough to read the manufacturer, unfortunately. I'm scouring the 'net looking for the same set up, but it may not be too difficult to make a generic rack work the same way so long as the right mounting clips can be found. A solid roof rack would definately make me think twice about trying to make a take-apart frame.
