: I'm considering building another stripper, but this time I want to speed up
: the process a bit. I'm not interested in the pretty wood look this go
: around......nothing against it but I've already built two pretty wood
: strip kayaks. I have a set of Outer Island plans that keep shouting at me
: for attention and I'd like to solict some advice from the great folks on
: this board.
: Instead of buying or making bead & cove strips, I'm considering ripping
: some old 3/4 thick pine and cedar boards I have into 3/16 thick strips,
: stapling them down to the forms without gluing them together, and when
: complete fill the gaps and small spaces between the hastily laid wood
: strips with an epoxy/microballon filler. I'm figuring maybe I could strip
: and fill the hull in one afternoon. Once the epoxy has cured for a couple
: of days, sand the hull smooth with a fairing board, then epoxy/glass the
: outside of the hull.
: Complete the rest of the hull and both sides of the deck the same way and all
: that's left is to build the hatches, cockpit, bulkheads, join together,
: etc, etc.
: Once complete, I would probably use some of Interlux's Brightside's marine
: polyurethane to finish things up.
: The big question......Has anyone here ever done anything like this? Any
: advice or link to a blog where its been described would be greatly
: appreciated!
: Thanks!

Would seem to be more trouble than it's worth, for me at least. I find it alot easier adding strips after the first few have been glued up, everything gets stiffer. Also you'd have a huge fairing job doing it that way, lots easier to plane wood than trying to fair a boat with a long board only.
