Steve,

Have you thought of using paulownia? Its weight is somewhere between WRC and Balsa. I've never used it, but I'm pretty sure there have been a couple of kayaks built with it. You might be able to get some in Swansea, SC. That's just south of Columbia.

I also have a good source for clear 2x4 WRC in Northern GA, if you don't mind driving. Let me know if you want the information for either.
