: This fair line down the center of each strip is your reference mark. When
: sanding over the surface it is the last rough area to disappear. This
: tells you you are done leveling the surface and that it is fair. Further
: sanding is only to remove course sanding marks.

: If you randomly go over a the strip surface with a plane your will destroy
: any reference to the fair surface naturally created by the strips.

: And so after planing you will sand? And you will just have to guess at what
: the true shape of the hull should be.

: The genius of using wood strips is that they naturally create fair curves.
: Work with the strips not against them.

: Skip the plane.

I confess, both to being a boat building novice and to liking my planes. Of my 3 planes, my cheap little thumbnail sized $10 at Lowe's plane is the one getting most all of the use on the boats. I can set the blade to to a hair's width and attack the exposed glue patches with a fair amount of control, removing very little wood. With all the curves, the larger planes don't seem to allow a lot of control (they just make everything flat), and I feel like I'm digging holes trying to remove glue patches with sandpaper. So mostly I use a cheap dinky little plane to remove glue patches (which I seem to have plenty of, not being stingy with the glue!). With Rob's advice, I'll keep the larger planes for furniture, and other things that need to be flat and square.

Not (yet) owning a ROS (which I'm sure would be sweet for the interiors), I've been comfortable and fairly happy cleaning things up with a belt/finish sander combo. I go at it with a fairly light touch, knowing the Porter Cable pulling a fresh 50-grit belt can and will eat up 7/32" of WRC pretty quickly, if allowed to do so. No such bad luck, yet! It's gotten me close enough that I didn't feel the long fairing board was really making things much better.
