Rob--

I'm not going to argue with you except to say that using a sharp plane to take down the highs at the joint between wood strips ( on the more curved parts of the hull) is very seductive. The wood smells good, a pile of shavings builds up around the boat, there's no dust and it's hard to stop.

To second your position, Ted Moores talk a lot about having a sanding "system," by which he means a plan of attack that considers the strengths and weaknesses of each tool and keeping the goal of a fair hull in mind. Ted's System is very much like yours--shape with a coarse grit, remove scratches with a medium grit, and get on to 'glassing.

You mentioned getting good strip fits, which is vital to this process. One of the keys to good strip fits is, of course, consistent strip thickness. But that's a whole 'nother hornets nest.
