I would generally agree that using a hand plane is a most satisfying sensation. With strips under tension though one has to be very careful not to get a dig in or a chatter if the grain is running in at even a minute angle. The sander is safer.

for aligning the odd strip that is too thin I use heavy card like say a post card cut into strips and slide it in between the strip and station where a missalignment occourrs due to a thin strip or a section in a strip that is a little thin. Sometimes a double wedge of postcard may even be necessary. It is also important in these cases to put in your paper wedge between the strip and the clamp jaw where clamps are used between stations. I hope this makes sense. My writing skills are a little off today (I do not use cove and bead)
