: I tend to agree and I think a lot of people use a plane to remove the high
: spots as well as glue residue for several reasons. 1. you don't need
: electricty. 2. a plane set very fine - running with the strips does a nice
: job or removing the strip edges. 3. no saw dust 4. It an enjoyable tool to
: use 5. cutting away glue works better than sanding it.

: In a model making or tool making shop you would be fired using a flat sander
: on a rounded surface. Everything is sanded with flexible, long sanding
: boards. I've been to commercial kayak manufacturers and all sanding of the
: plugs is with long flexible sanding boards.

: Robs method is totally valid and the proof is in the outcome - Rob make
: beautiful boats. And his point of not flattening out the surfaces is
: correct. But I think nipping off high spots with a fine plane works well
: and I'll bet most people do that and switch to sanding once that's done.

Hi Jay,
I use a spoke shave rather than a plane for taking off the high edges, at an angle. I find it very easy to roll the shave so it only takes off the high points on a outer curved surface.
Once the highs are down, it's time for sanding with a long-board.
Flexible boards on an inner curve.

Not on a kayak, so far, a cat shelter, a doghouse and a few bird-boxes. They weren't pretty looking but the animals didn't mind. :D
