: I tend to agree and I think a lot of people use a plane to remove the high
: spots as well as glue residue for several reasons. 1. you don't need
: electricty. 2. a plane set very fine - running with the strips does a nice
: job or removing the strip edges. 3. no saw dust 4. It an enjoyable tool to
: use 5. cutting away glue works better than sanding it.
: In a model making or tool making shop you would be fired using a flat sander
: on a rounded surface. Everything is sanded with flexible, long sanding
: boards. I've been to commercial kayak manufacturers and all sanding of the
: plugs is with long flexible sanding boards.
: Robs method is totally valid and the proof is in the outcome - Rob make
: beautiful boats. And his point of not flattening out the surfaces is
: correct. But I think nipping off high spots with a fine plane works well
: and I'll bet most people do that and switch to sanding once that's done.
I've no doubt I'd be fired in a heartbeat for some of my methods! But until then...
I guess I pretty much treat the belt sander like a plane. It's a fluid process. The sander is never ever at rest in one spot, I apply very little pressure and run at a slight diagonal, which for some reason gives me confidence the I'm not dig-in an edge of the belt.
I've little doubt the ROS and long-board perform better work. Been a while since procuring any new tools, I'll take ET's advice and go shopping. Particularly if the ROS will help smoothing out my fill-coats.
Regarding my dinky thumb-nail plane. It did better (for me) in taking off glue spots than my larger planes. Mostly, because it's so small that you can actually see what your planing (and not planing) as you do it. With the larger planes, you don't actually know what your taking off until after you've made the pass. The little plane did it's best work doing the bead/cove work on the random ends. It was a pretty handy little tool.
