: I have plans for a stitch and glue decked canoe and I am thinking about the
: fiberglass layup. The core is 4mm plywood and the plans call for 6oz glass
: skins. I am interested in a more durable "expedition lite"
: layup, possibly incorporating some s-glass or kevlar. What would the
: experts here recommend? Thanks for your replies!

Stick to simple 6 ounce glass. Add a second layer over the bottom, covering the football-shaped center of the boat and going up the sides about 2 inches. That should be plenty strong.

Adding kevlar doesn't make much sense. You're not going to be saving any weight, and you'llg et the strength from glass alone. The cost increase is not worth it. If you want to go with S-glass, that could be an option, but regular e-glass is pretty darn tough already, particularly in a 6 ounce fabric.

I'm not sure what kind of abuse you are planning on, but plain old e-glass should do the trick. If you should brak something, then just glue it back together and slap a patch of more glass on it.
