I agree with you whole heartedly.

I completely acknowledge Ted's great contribution to strip building.

The authority that this status gives him, makes his comments not only believed, but taken as gospel.

He has repeatedly stated, in his books and in print, that surfacing a striper by sanding is inferior to using a plane.

Such statements as, its a noisy, dusty business that results in second class workmanship, do harm to understanding how to sand in a first class way and promote a negative attitude toward sanding in general.

To state, you will feel more like a woodworker with a pile of shavings at your feet, than shop full of dust, is thoroughly condescending.

I do not state that the method I advocate is "the best".
I believe the sanding technique I advocate, which was not available when Ted codified his techniques, is a simpler and easier technique for a novice to handle on their first boat.

I acknowledge that using a plane is a technique that some choose to use and it is obvious that a person skilled in using a plane, can achieve the same ends.

I constantly hear about strip builders negative feelings toward sanding.

If I have loudly and repeated stated that I believe sanding can be a first class technique if understood, it be because of the shadow Ted's comments have thrown over the issue.
