FWIW I agree with you. I seriously looked at doing that but I didn't like the looks of it.

Yes, mock it up on the bench and try it both ways! Nothing better than testing it. You will probably want a positive stop on the skeg to keep it from going to far down too. That and the bungee are what hold mine in place.

The more I look at yours, the more I lean toward the white slot. Location of bungee and slot are very important!! So test it before you commit. I rigged mine up on the bench, clamped it down operated it. Tied it in failure mode (no bungee, no cord) just to see what would happen. Now that I am happy I am making final versions. I have two sitting on the bench ready to coat in epoxy and install.

If anyone is interested, I am going to measure and make a drawing so down the road when I need one I can duplicate it.
