: Hey Rob,
: Thanks for identifying that most novices are using incorrect
: grits. I have built two boats and repeatedly have caused myself
: tons of extra work from doing exactly what you said we do..using too light a
: grit and then using the edge of the ros thereby creating gouges that have
: to be faired again...and then still using too light of a grit...repeat.
: Ok so i read what you were saying and sanding has gone from hell to something
: i suddenly sort of look forward to doing.
: I probably did read elsewhere what grits to use but it did not sink in til i
: read your statements on the matter. It's amazing to me how much effort i
: have watsed.
You are welcome.
I hate to see you waste all the same time I did.
It's not just novices. That's pretty much how I did it too, years ago, when I worked for a GC (general contractor) doing finish carpentry, but as I said, when you work with wood in most other occupations the rough surfaces have been milled out by a planer. Then you learn sanding by the "follow the leader" method and never think about what you're doing again. You don't have to think using a belt sander on flat surfaces, just spread your feet apart and hold on!
That's why so many guys love belt sanders. Heavy, noisy, and about 500 hp., who needs any stinkin grit!
Aw, to be young and in love!
The cool thing about the ROS is the lighter your pressure the more aggressive it is. Ever start it off the wood and let it rev up then bring it down on the wood? It really cuts don't it. Well if you hold it lightly against your wood and even lift it off from time to time to see how you're doing, it will cut faster, than pressing hard.
Just be careful near edges and rounding the bilge. This is why speed control is great. You can set it slow for rounding the bilge or working the stems, or for the whole job, to start, then increase the speed and aggressiveness on the flats.
Rob
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.
