Hi Brent-
Here is a link to Harvey Golden's web site. He uses Zar and pigment on his boats. You can get the idea pretty well. If you go with a solid color I'm sure you can keep it partly translucent, but a lot of people do "faux" finishes with 3-4 different colors over multiple coats to simulate the blotchiness of sealskin. There are some of both on the site.
