: Hi Mike,
: I did too, worst I ever saw was a submarine coming in to port in Spain with a
: full gale blowing, said the sail planes were touching the seas on each
: roll, would make the roll about 75 degrees each way! At that port because
: of the distance of the continental shelf, you have to come in the whole
: last day on the surface. Modern submarines are poor surface craft being
: completely round bottomed.
: Guys really looked green as well as having a problem walking coming off that
: boat.

Bill,
I'm sniggering in sympathy at that picture. We hit 50 degree rolls caught in a Force 12 in Biscay, Dec 82, so my sympathy is truly sincere. At least we had good stabilisers running. Subs don't have them, do they?
We had a wee party. And we were a wet Service. Rationed, of course.
Slightly mad, when I think back on it. But I learned one important thing then. Never, never open a can of beer immediately after it has rolled across the deckhead and dropped right into your hand. Well, the invited officers got a laugh out of it. (Hmm, I wonder if it's a chargable offence to soak officers in beer?)
Oddly enough, none of us were seasick during the storm.
Hope none of the sardines were hurt.
