Epoxy: Fiberglass overlap

The boat I am currently working on is too wide for 60" fiberglass, so I am having to use 1 piece (6 ounce) for each side, and overlap in the middle by a couple of inches. If I wet out piece 1, wait until it is sandable, feather the edge, lay piece 2, wait until it is sandable, and feather the edge, I'm not going to have green epoxy for applying the fill coats.
Can I get away with not feathering the edges, or possibly just the "underneath" edge, or am I stuck just getting a mechanical connection, rather than a chemical one?
