My SnG experience is that the panels are held together on the inside with fillets and 'glass. I think we're talking about an exterior strip here. Since you're probably interested in removing a foot or two of 'glass tape at either end, I'd suggest that sanding would work quite well, although with more dust than the heat gun method.
