I knock off the highs with a cabinet scraper. It takes all of ten minutes to do. The only reason is it to keep the cloth from snagging so it drapes better.
Do not sand. If you sand too deep, the wood color lightens and does not rewet with the next epoxy coat and will not darken to match.
