I guess it would depend on the use of the kayak and what your comfortable with. I have built my risers and coamings out of 3mm plywood and apply two layers of glass on the outside, from one to two inches on the deck, then up the riser and under the coaming lip, and three layers of glass on the inside, one to two inches under the deck, up the riser and then over the coaming lip. They are very strong and I feel confident that they will not fail when performing a rescue on the water.
