: The brush now has its greatest load of varnish. Most varnish will dump with

Just to make things perfectly clear. The first stroke releases the most varnish so it is important to stroke down from that point with the vertical strokes to pull the excess varnish down and create an even coating over the whole area.

The point of the criss-cross stroke pattern is to create an even coating of varnish that will be drip and sag free.
