Have been following this thread with interest.

How about a folding float assist ?

You could mount a hinged float assist , say aluminium tube just forward of the cockpit rim with a small float at the end-- your choice of float -- wood,foam,air-bag etc.

When you want to fish just open up the float tubes port and starboard. Since they will be forward of your "fishing-position" should not affect the said operation.
When done, just fold back the two poles so that are parallel to the chines, and the small float is somewhere behind the cockpit. Wont affect your paddling when you move to that next fish spot.
