Shorter shaft = less reach = less stress and also = higher cadence. You work better and more often within the power zone of the stroke. So you can use a wider paddle for the same effort and increased return. However, that is for high angle paddling which requires more effort in the long term. So long term you might paddle lower and want a longer shaft. Also, as Brian pointed out, different conditions can change your need also. So get an adjustable paddle, or if you already have one, cut it in the middle, shorten it by the desired amount and add a ferrule.
