Reading Ken's post another thought occurred to me. The blades on the paddle pictured here are from a cockpit cutout. For this reason I used the shapes I had by default. By accident they worked out very well and compare favourably with my very expensive carbon paddle.

Well they are curved along their length rather than accross it. The benefit I have found from this is that when surfing downwind, one can put in a rudder stroke right against the gunwhale with half the blade in the water. It gives just the right amount of skeg effect without any drag and almost negligible crab catching effect.

My carbon paddle which curves the other way can cause a capsize if it is used in fast water without due care and careful placement.

I imagine GPs would benefit from this straightness of blade too.
