Thanks Et, I gleaned some more ideas from your pictures! (the temporary vertical 'keeper' strips for one) Your Dalcotan sounds like a urethane glue - I had some called 'fosroc' that looked and behaved very similarly. Quite expensive compared to the Aliphatic PVAs though, and it eventually went 'off' in the bottle before I finished using it.
