I agree with you, but it comes down to convenience. I don't have the time to prowl around looking for deals on used block planes. There's only one pawn shop in the area and no used tool dealers nearby. I can get the Groz planes for $18.15 each from Garrett Wade and be done with it, but other than sharpening, I don't want to spend a load of time tuning them. All I really need to know is if they're decently machined (flat sole, smooth throat & blade bed) and if the blades will hold an edge decently enough to work cedar (I suspect the latter is true with just about anything).
