Brian- check the Fine Woodworking web site. They did a test at some point, and Groz and a couple of other cheap planes were included. At least you'll find out if they're flat enough to make a paddle.

For my money, I have to agree with others on the source. Old Stanley 110s go for $8-$10 at my local antiques shop, knock-offs for $4-6. There may be better sources for the Groz planes than Garret Wade, also. (Japan Woodworker, Wooden Boat Store, Jamestown Distributors) Worth checking.
