I have epoxied some cardboard to see if it was possible to do a S&G kayak out of some quality boards (there must be different grades of cardboard) My problem was saturation of the inner segments of the board ... I just failed to develop confidence in the boards.
But I still epoxy the outsides of cardboard boxes when I need a lasting, sturdy container. This may be better than watching epoxy cook off...
: I saw this a few days ago in Popular Science. I know... say what you will
: about the magazine. I still think it's pretty ingenious. I guess that's
: one way to build build a boat out of cardboard!
: (Side Note: Since surfboards float on water and carry a person are they
: classified as boats?!)
: Dan
: "This surfboard’s frame is cut from 16.6 square feet of cardboard and
: covered in transparent fiberglass.... he used 3-D modeling software to
: design a snap-together deck that’s as sturdy as a conventional model and
: performs just as well, made from the cheapest material he could find:
: cardboard.
: The board’s frame contains nearly 400 corrugated-paper slats precisely cut by
: a computer-controlled saw. The slats intersect at interlocking notches,
: forming a pattern of triangles and hexagons that provides strength by
: evenly dispersing force throughout the board. Sheldrake makes it
: watertight by wrapping it in fiberglass cloth hardened with epoxy resin
: (similar to traditional boards)."
