Thanks! I would encourage you to build your own boat for sure. Lots of work but you get a whole lot of satisfaction out of it.

I did both paint jobs about the same. After final sanding of boat I used and a wooden jig to get the correct spacing as the paint wraps up over the deck about half a inch and used a pencil with the jig to run a line all the way down the boat. Then taped off the deck right to that line. After paint was cured and wet sanded I then taped off the paint to varnish the deck. No overlap.

If your gonna build a S&G I would suggest building from a kit your first time. The Merg was my second build but CLC(my first boat) puts together a top notch instruction book with the kit that really does a good job of giving you all the tips you need. This forum was also a great resource for me.
