Only need a 1/2" to 3/4" clearance between the lip and the deck. Most have a lip of between 3/4" to 1". Mine are 3/4" x 3/4", works fine.

Closed cell foam works for hatch gaskets, rubber weather stripping too. Don't want open cell foam, sucks up water like a sponge (which is what it is).

Only concern on soft pad eye style ends is will be a bitch to replace if you ever need to.
