Originally I carried this kayak upside down as in the picture and the base hum (fiddle like) in the uncovered large cockpit was overwhelming. I could barely hear the radio turned on high. I now carry the kayak right side up and the noise with the cockpit open is quite low in comparison. With the cockpit covered on long trips the noise level is nill. So with the boat upside down I think the airflow was much higher sliding over the car and crammed into the cockpit, which was acted like a scoop catching the wind. But I am guessing that with the boat upside down and with the cockpit covered, that the boat curve might act like a foil to give lift and therefore lighten the weight of the car, which would give better mileage.
