SS worked well for me for plane chisels and other needs.I go free hand and use a cheap, low angle plane for the work . Was happy to get a decent edge very quickly but am sure my free hand has changed the edge angle, it still works good though. Set up is - a plane of glass with a piece of cheap not slip rubber on back and craft adhesive spray to glue wet n dry paper up to 2000 grit. The paper comes of clean when replacing.
