I've done it both ways. Keep in mind that you can either slice a 2x4 in half or use a 1x(X) lumber. You might be able to find more 16 ft boards looking for the 1x(X) dimensions. That said, scarfs are a pain to make but work fine. Both boats are about 15.5 ft long and I concider both to be rock solid.
