I do a lot of woodworking besides boat building. And like you said everyone has a different take and comfort level. Me, I would prefer to have to have good (stable) infeed and outfeed over a longer fence. Supporting a long board is much more important to me than a long fence. If it tilts on you and the blade grabs it your going to experience kickback or stall the saw.

Assuming you have a decent table saw and fence if you start with a good straight edge you should have no problem holding it against the existing fence. But without supports on the ends your going to be fighting it.

Zero clearance and a splitter are great ideas! My splitter stays on my saw unless I am doing dado's.
