: I've built a couple of S&G boats and one stripper, a Redfish Spring Run kit
: and I'm hooked on stripping, so I'm about ready to cut strips. Never done
: so before, so I've searched the site for threads about tablesaw setups
: using table extensions, featherboards etc. I'm planning on milling 18'
: boards, utilyzing 2 featherboards (one on the table and one on the fence),
: a zero clearance insert and a splitter. It appears there are multiple
: thoughts as to the length of the fence extension. I've seen pic's with
: short extensions (slightly longer than fence) and pic's with much longer
: extensions. Some have the extension go past the blade and some have the
: extension end at the blade.
: It seems to me that the longer the board being ripped, the better control I'd
: have with a longer extension before the blade, assuming my infeed table is
: setup correctly. I'm not sure if running the extension past the blade is
: necessary as long as the splitter is doing it's job but I've never done
: this before and am ignorant. I'll be running shorter (12'/14') boards thru
: as a test so I can try and make modifications before before I whack my
: longer ones.
: Any thoughts/advice on the fence extension and placement is much appreciated.
: This site with it's collective knowledge is a goldmine.
Ditto on stable long tables/fences. Go w/ the zero clearance insert. I would not extend the feed fence beyond the point of cut. Opted to make my after-cut fence the splitter as well, by beveling the tip to a fine point. I started w/ feather boards, both vert. and horiz., but quickly discarded them as I found myself spending considerable time/thought fighting/tweaking them. Desired to invest more thought on consistent cuts and keeping my fingers. Once you've got it dialed in, you'll find a rhythm and it will move along in good time. Do take the time every so often and clear away the dust build-up that will accumulate along your fences, allowing a smooth and consistent feed.
