Well, getting a good start and hitting the wind shifts is far more important. Having competitive gear can only take you so far - and will rarely make up for lack of skill. You want to race? Get a Sabot or El Toro. You could even make one. There are actual fleets of those boats, with regular racing, and in them you can find out what yacht racing is all about. Or, for something a bit more lively, try a Sunfish, a Laser (radial rig for your weight) or even a Hobie 16. These boats all have flaws, but they all have enormous active racing fleets throughout the world. How many PDR's were at your messabout? The last Laser regatta I was in had well over 100.

That's not to say that PDR's aren't worthy! There's just so few of them . . . I think they are great idea and it's an intriguing concept to come up with a better rig, etc. Likely having a well cut "real" sail and good foils will give you a leg up on whatever fleet of PDRs you can find - but not if you blithely sail off on the headed tack.

Hmm, maybe if you made the boat out of 4mm Okoume plywood, instead of Luann, then it would be as light, or lighter - and vastly quicker and easier to build - than a stripper. Might be cheaper, too, if you don't paint it with epoxy.
