Hello everyone,
I've ordered plans and forms for the Hybrid Night Heron! Before they arrive, I'd like to have the plywood ready to go. Nick has generously sent me a PDF of where to make the cuts to get enough wood out of two sheets.
I don't have enough level floor to scarf on the ground, so this is what I've come up with. Three saw horses are lined up with two sixteen foot 2x4's (the straightest I could find) on top. A photo of this is below. I will position the middle saw horse underneath the joint being scarfed and place a 2x4 along this horse perpendicular and between the two parallel boards for support of the joint. As you can see, the horses have pre-drilled holes which will make screwing the boards down easy.
The horses are only 38" wide though, which means that the ply will have 5" of overhang on each side of the saw horse. Is it okay to not have support on the edge? I was planning on just using a clamp on each end. If this isn't a good idea, I'll just modify the plan by bringing the parallel boards closer and running a 10" 2x4 off of one end...
I hope to pick up the plywood pretty soon, there seem to be a few local suppliers.
What's the deal with epoxy? Any recommendations on the cheapest epoxy that's still of good quality? Is thickener necessary? The link below recommends using Cab-O-Sil for scarfing...
Thanks,
Mike
