Other: A possible bow loop idea

I have a pine accent strip that measures about 1/2" height. I was thinking about drilling through it for the bow loop hole, and putting in a white pvc pipe to refill the space. I was thinking this might be more durable and very easy. Anyone ever tried anything like that? and what were the results.
