Hi Scott,

It has a lot to do with the boat. My Derijp a strip built version of a Greenland hunting kayak from the 1600's, doesn't have a carved seat. the boat has a 16-3/4" beam and has just over 7 inches of clearance under the coaming. I found a carved seat to be very uncomfortable and it reduced the cog. The current seat is about 1/4" thick.
