I've used a damp tea-towel and a hot iron to good effect at reducing the holes but it doesn't eliminate them, just makes them a little less obvious. I like the fact that the holes express the building technique. A friend of mine put it to me like this when I was obsessing over a strip built rowing scull "Are you building a boat or a grand piano? If it's a boat, let it be a boat."
