: OK, how the heck would you do that? I assume you would use a coping saw or
: some other hand saw to trim it with? Now I am a big hand tool fan but to
: me trimming it after it was on the boat would seem a lot harder than just
: doing it off the boat.

: Plus it seems it would be harder to locate the lip and glue it up on the
: boat. Or are you talking about trimming it to height and then building the
: lip?

: My reasoning was simple. Now this is my first coaming but it just seemed
: logical to make it off the boat and then install it. What can I say? It
: worked for me. What your saying "sounds" much harder to me. But
: what do I know?? Tell me how you do it. I am open to learning a new trick!
: Maybe I did it the hard way.

"What your saying "sounds" much harder to me". That is why I asked. Because your method looks harder to me but I could be wrong and I'm always looking for easier ways to do things too.

I've done all my coaming risers by letting them hang haphazardly into the cockpit and then trimming them after. I use one of those flat and flexible Stanly pull saws to make the cut. You can easily hold the saw flat against the inside of the hull with a couple of fingers as you saw and you quickly wind up with it complete in a single cut and ready to sand a radius on the edge. The other plus is that you cant see the joint from inside the cockpit so you don't see any edge grain at the bottom of the riser. And as you can see in my photo I trimmed the height first just to get the excess out of the way before trimming the bottom. On this kayak I used strips for the lip and glued them on top of the riser but I have used other methods of forming the lip too. All after trimming the risers height.

Here is a shot from Ken's site showing a similar method but using a continuous sheet material like you did. http://www.dbeweb.com/kayak/images/gdeck_05.jpg
