I actually use tongue depressers as they are flexable and do not split too easily. Do tape them underneath or they will stick to your hull. I use a 3/4 inch panel nail (fine guage) and only tack them in enough to hold the plank to the form. I use a small hammer. If you get a bit where more holding power in needed then hammer all the way down. The tongue depresser, once it is torn off, allows the head to stand proud so you can get pliers to it without damaging your cedar.
Of course, where not much preassure is needed (like the entire deck) you don't really need a nail head spacer, or a nail really.
If you were really keen you could cover all the nail holes with Dan's abalone dots.
