To be honest. I used pallet wrap to do the sea test on my recovery skin on frame:

The pallet wrap worked ok for my seatrials but leaked a little. I would have to bail the kayak out every 5 mintues. I would try the grocery store bought cling-wrap film next time because that is what Tony Calvert used on his baidarka that was sea trialled at the same time.

my undoings were?:

* The pallet wrap was large and hard to handle by myself. Next time I would be looking to get a good wrap with good pressure - a bit like what you would be trying to achieve to get a firm pressure bandage on a persons arm. I reckon it would be easier for one person to hold a kitchen wrap sized roll and maintain good pressure while it was unrolled over the frame.

*my wraps were quite widely spaced - maybe 6" overlap. Next time I would go for Short 1" overlaps like Tony did. That would result with a multiple layered skin which was stronger and more watertight.

* Your average grocery store cling wrap seemed to cling a bit better on a compound shaped device. The helicals at the bow and stern are quite tight.

My two cents. I will certainly be trying the store bought cling wrap on my next project.

Having said all that. John Callaghan had a very successful 'saran wrap launch test' using 1 layer of relatively heavy duty plastic as pictured.

Cheers Pete
