Actually, after WW2 ended there was a big surplus of aircraft-grade aluminum.
Companies like Grumman attempted to create new products out of it, canoes being an example. That's how the world was 'gifted' with tin-canoes, not to be confused with real canoes.

Aluminum canoes are a bit like products of Apple corporation or Harley-Davidson: the triumph of marketing over engineering.
Neither Apple nor Harley can compete on the basis of *performance-to-price ratio* (mark the meaning of this phrase), so they have to resort to creating a Cult Following of it's disciples (and doing it well indeed)
