Well that would explain it!
What do you all think about building one of these with Tom Yost's construction style? Time is the key factor here. I think it could go together pretty quickly building the 8 ribs shown in the diagram either by cutting them from plywood or as beefed up laminations. Brian is very adamant about not playing with the lines of the design, but I wonder how this would impact performance. With more deformation of the fabric, I imagine there would be slightly more drag... any other consequences? 8 Cut outs is a lot easier than 28 steam bent ribs. Maybe also go with PVC rather than the more time consuming ballistic nylon.
On building time for one of these in general. I just can't see how these take so long to build. In my highly inexperienced mind it's simple. Just to throw out some crude numbers to illustrate a point:
1 day to cut ribs,
1 day to cut / scarf lengthwise pieces
1 day to cut the joining things at stern and bow and to make the cockpit
1 day to finish the pieces and begin assembly
1 day to finish assembly and seal the wood
1-2 days to skin the boat depending on whether or not the skin needs to be painted/sealed
I'm going to have to try this just to see where all the extra hours come in!
Regards,
Mike
: Hi Michael,
: Brian Schultz, the designer, just finished the final design. I'd say he is
: the only one to have paddled one so far. The lines and details just got
: put up on his site a few days ago.
: I know SoF building is quicker than Strip, but we're not THAT fast.
: I'm interested in it and would probably make one before I get my Shooting
: Star started. My workspace is a bit crowded now and at least a SoF can be
: built ourdoors.
: i think it would be more finicky to build as it would have to match the lines
: very closely. Like building a replica for museum display.
