: Well that would explain it!
: What do you all think about building one of these with Tom Yost's
: construction style? Time is the key factor here. I think it could go
: together pretty quickly building the 8 ribs shown in the diagram either by
: cutting them from plywood or as beefed up laminations. Brian is very
: adamant about not playing with the lines of the design, but I wonder how
: this would impact performance. With more deformation of the fabric, I
: imagine there would be slightly more drag... any other consequences? 8 Cut
: outs is a lot easier than 28 steam bent ribs. Maybe also go with PVC
: rather than the more time consuming ballistic nylon.
: On building time for one of these in general. I just can't see how these take
: so long to build. In my highly inexperienced mind it's simple. Just to
: throw out some crude numbers to illustrate a point: 1 day to cut ribs,
: 1 day to cut / scarf lengthwise pieces
: 1 day to cut the joining things at stern and bow and to make the cockpit
: 1 day to finish the pieces and begin assembly
: 1 day to finish assembly and seal the wood
: 1-2 days to skin the boat depending on whether or not the skin needs to be
: painted/sealed
: I'm going to have to try this just to see where all the extra hours come in!
: Regards,
: Mike
You forgot to add in a day every other day to stand around and stare at the thing trying to decide if you're doing it right, preferably while holding a cup of coffee and talking to someone who has also built a boat - this is called "professional consultation"
Seriously though, I built an SC-1 with Brian last summer (the precursor to the F-1). With him leading us through it step-by-step and with a few things done ahead of time, it took 8 days - I don't think it could happen much quicker than that. I've been working on my current Yost-style build for a month and am about halfway there.
My SC-1 is a truly sweet boat, so if you can build the F-1 truly and closely to spec I think you will be very happy as the F-1 is an improved version (I'm still happy though). A majority of people who try it would like to have one of their own.
By the way, I believe the 8 cross sections on the F-1 drawing are simply the survey locations used to measure the hull - they don't correspond to anything structural inside the boat. If you did a Yost-style frame, you would have to decide on bulkhead locations to give the right shape - that rear chine is heavily bent, so might some extra bulkhead support.
