Oh, I forgot to add:

The lightweight polyester is easy to skin with. I managed to get a tremendous amount of stretch into the stuff I used (twill weave).

The rustoleum added 10 lbs to the weight of a 10' x 24" kayak. That's reason enough to use a different coating!

Light weight polyester should be perfect for a testing skin. Relatively easy to work with, more durable than cling wrap, and not so expensive that it will hurt to remove it for changes...

: I used a ~4 oz. polyester on my first kayak, coated with Rustoleum (run of
: the mill stuff from the big-box retailer). A year later, its a bit worse
: for wear - although none of the damage happened when paddling! At any
: rate, the coating is getting brittle and it punctures pretty easily
: especially with sharp objects. I have always wondered if a polyurethane
: would have worked out better. Zar would definately be more durable than
: the Rustoleum, but the fabric is still the weak link.
