If you like the look of carbon fiber, the One Ocean Kayak site has a page on how to mold your own. I've made similar ones before... It's pretty easy and doesn't use a lot of carbon fiber.

The image is of the interior of the "Nereida" Njord. The padeyes and hooks were used for internal hatch bungees, mounting the backband and for hatch lid tethers. I just glued mine on with thickened epoxy. Here's a link to my page:
