Ended up, since this "is" a prototype and doesn't have to last forever, with exterior glued birch from Menards, ie: cheap :) It's a premium underlayment so has all sorts of things printed on the face. It'll be all enclosed, so don't matter.

If the prototype works I think I'll do the same thing as a stripper, would be much prettier sans chines and with rounded sections vs. flat ones.
