Glen, the roving bead (I think that is what you call it) is the material you put at the joint between the coming riser and the deck to soften the angle because the glass won't lay in there very well. It is along this bead where I was having problems with air bubbles. Thinking back on it now, I should have put the bead in at the same time I did the layup.
PS. I am on my first kayak as well but have learned a lot lurking here and reading Nick's book.
