I use microbaloons for making fairing compound - it sands out much more readily, since microballoons are basiclly tiny bubbles full of air. For end pours, I use sawdust or wood flour - much cheaper, and it thickens things just fine. To avoid the overheating, I stand the kayak on end with the bow or stern encased in a garbage bag, then put it in a waster-paper basket full of ice. Let it chill for a few minutes before making the pour.
